Organization: Somerset Career & Technical Center is one of 27 CTE centers and regions in Maine, united in integrating academics and technical skills to better prepare each student to move into his or her appropriate position in the 21st Century.
History: The Somerset Career & Technical Center had a modest beginning in 1969 when two vocational courses, Carpentry and Automotive Technology, were offered at the old Skowhegan Area High School. Then, in the fall of 1970, when the new building was ready, the Center opened at its present site with six programs being offered to area students. The programs were: Automotive Technology, Carpentry, Electricity, Drafting, Conservation, and Distributive Education.
Somerset Career & Technical Center is located adjacent to Skowhegan Area High School on West Front Street in Skowhegan, Maine. The Center provides Technical CTE Training for students of school districts located in Somerset County. These school districts are: SAD #13, serving the towns of Bingham, Carratunk, Moscow, The Forks Plantation, West Forks Plantation; SAD #53, serving towns of Pittsfield, Burnham, Detroit; SAD #54, serving the towns of Skowhegan, Canaan, Cornville, Mercer, Norridgewock, Smithfield; SAD #59, serving the towns of Athens, Brighton Plantation, Madison, Starks; SAD #74, serving the towns of Anson, Embden, New Portland, North Anson, and Solon.
Population Served: Junior and Senior students from Carrabec, Maine Central Institute, Madison, Skowhegan, and Upper Kennebec Valley High Schools. High school students are served at no charge to students.
Students attend the Center for a full day/every other day and the alternate day at the Member High School. Transportation to and from the Center is provided by the School District in which the student lives.
Success: Success is measured through program completion rates, state and national certifications completed, work placement, and continued education after graduation.
Connection with Business: Individual Program Advisory committees, school and work Cooperative Education agreements, Clinical Placement Sites, Business Education Internship, work placement relationships. SCTC is a member of the Somerset Workforce Development Team and the Somerset County Economic Corporation.
