Cosmetology at SCTC

Discover your passion and creativity in the Cosmetology program at Somerset Career & Technical Center (SCTC) — where high school students begin their journey toward a professional career in the beauty industry. This one-year, hands-on program blends classroom learning with real-world salon experiences to give you a strong foundation in the art, science, and business of cosmetology.

Students start by learning theory and safety practices essential to professional success, then move on to hands-on training in hair sculpting, color techniques, perm design, and basic nail and skin care. You’ll work in a fully equipped lab setting, practicing the skills that form the core of every successful cosmetologist’s toolkit — from client communication and sanitation to creativity and precision in styling.

Throughout the program, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of industry standards, customer service, and professional presentation, preparing you for the fast-paced and rewarding world of beauty and wellness. Students can earn up to 300 hours toward Maine’s required 1,500-hour cosmetology license, and these hours are transferable to many post-secondary cosmetology schools, helping you continue your training with a head start.
